Tuesday looked a little different from the outset. The team pushed departure even earlier to buy more time for pickups, and it paid off — the day camp got underway ahead of schedule. That head start came with its own lesson, though: as lunchtime approached, several kids grew restless and hungry, and the team realized most children hadn't eaten breakfast before being picked up. Starting tomorrow, the plan is to offer a simple bowl of oatmeal on arrival — enough to carry them through to lunch with a little more patience.
Day two also brought a different kind of challenge. With a day of trust already built, some kids felt freer to test the limits — nowhere more so than with one camper, Myron, who is carrying a complicated situation at home. He showed real anxiety today, and it took the whole team — including youth leaders Sophia and Helen — to give him the attention he needed. In the middle of it, Helen ended up in a long, unhurried conversation with him about creation, about the world, and about Jesus — the kind of moment that doesn't show up on any schedule but matters more than most of what does. Please keep Myron in prayer, along with his mother Santana and his sisters Shakira and MJ — MJ has been recovering from a car accident and several rounds of skull reconstructive surgery. Pray that God's hand would be over this whole family.
Volleyball ran far smoother today. Alfred handled a steady trickle of drop-in kids from summer school walking by, folding them into the day without missing a beat. The one rough moment came when a girl took a volleyball to the head after a few of the boys hadn't quite learned to hold back their spikes yet — a lesson in restraint for next time.
Two more things worth saying out loud: Dorothy is single-handedly teaching the Hosanna kids, which is no small feat on its own, and the food crew has quantities down to a science now, adjusting on the fly to whatever the day's attendance brings. Tonight, that meant a well-earned brisket dinner.
